What is the UPSC full form?
The word UPSC is an acronym and the full form of the UPSC is “Union Public Service Commission” which had its foundational roots way back in 1854. The UPSC is a constitutional body that has its existence in Article 315 of the constitution of India. Article 315 says: There will be the Public Service Commission (PSC) constitution for the State and the Union of India.
About the UPSC
During the East India Company rule, the director of the East India company used to nominate the civil servants for the company. And the Haileybury College in London was the training center for the civil servant. The foundation of merit-based selection of the Civil Servant which is used today was set up by Lord Macaulay’s reports which recommended the selection of the civil servant on the merit basis through the competitive exam and they will replace the patronage-based system of the company. So, in the year 1854 in London, the civil service was introduced and the first competitive exam was conducted in the year 1855.
Historical Background of UPSC
In the initial days, London is the only center for the civil service exam and the age limit was 18 years to 23 years. The European classics had the most of section in the syllabus of the Civil Services and the paper was of descriptive nature.
Brother of Rabindranath Tagore, Shri Satyendranath Tagore in the year 1864 became the first Indian to qualify for the Civil Services Exam.
When in the year 1922, the Federal Public Service Commission was set up then the exam was begun to be held in India. Frist in Allahabad then the Exam center was in New Delhi.
The Government of India Act 1919 gave the practical shape to the Public Service Commission. The Lee Commission in the year 1924 made the strong recommendation for the establishment of the Public Service Commission (PSC) and in the year 1926, for the first time in India the Public Service Commission was established.
After the independence of India, when the Constitution of India was inaugurated on the 26th of January 1950, the name “Federal Public Service Commission” changed to the “Union Public Service Commission”.
