What is the IPS full form?

The word IPS is an acronym and the IPS full form is “Indian Police Service”. The Indian Police Service is also known as the police service. It is the central government service that is recruited by the UPSC. IPS is one of the three all-India services others are IAS, IRS.

It is known to be one of the most reputed and prestigious jobs in India. After the independence, the Indian Imperial Police was replaced by the Indian Police service, which was started in the year 1948.

How an IPS Officer is recruited?

An IPS officer is recruited through the Civil Services Exam conducted by the UPSC every year. The Civil Services exam is conducted in three stages that are:

Stage 1– is of prelims the candidate has to qualify it to appear in the mains examination.

Stage 2– is of mains that is it is of descriptive nature the candidate has to qualify it to appear in the interview stage.

Stage 3– interview stage.

On the basis of the marks of mains and interview the final selection of the candidate is done and on the basis of the candidate preferences and marks the post of the IPS is allotted.

Eligibility Criteria for an IPS officer

The candidate appearing for the IPS exam should have fulfilled the following eligibility criteria.

Educational Qualification

To apply for this employment, the individual must be a graduate of a recognized university. The Union Public Service Commission holds an exam once a year. Due to its extremely competitive nature, this is considered India’s most difficult exam.

 Physical Standards
  • Height: 165 cms for males, 150 cms for ladies. The minimum height requirement is relaxed for SC/ST candidates and candidates of races such as Gorkhas, Assamese, Garhwali’s, and others.
  • Men must have a minimum chest girth of 84 cms, while women must have a minimum chest girth of 79 cms.
  • Myopia, including the cylinder, should not exceed minus 4.00 D, while hypermetropia, including the cylinder, should not exceed plus 4.00 D. Candidates who squint are automatically disqualified. Spectacles are OK.
